The men at the garrison called it the dead man’s mask. After each battle, someone found it among the bodies, face down in the mud with its cords cut. No one could say who had worn it. The quartermaster locked it in a chest and kept the key beneath his shirt. Before the next battle, the chest stood open.
They saw the mask again during the winter siege, high on the wall where no one was meant to be. A figure stood beneath it, drawing a blade slowly across the stone. The gate was barred and the watch doubled. By morning, the defenders were gone. The quartermaster found the mask inside the gate, its cords neatly tied. This time, he left it where it lay.
